How To Import Photos From Camera To Mac Without Iphoto
Importing photos and videos into iMac from Sony camera
For those of you lot with an iMac and a Sony camera, tin can you walk me through your workflow of what how you lot import your photos and videos into the iMac? Information technology seems that Sony does not provide an Mac compatible software with their cameras and so I'm wondering if y'all just use iMovie and iPhoto and if so, are in that location whatever things to recollect when importing using iPhoto and iMovie with Sony products. This question would be directed towards people that own the RX100 or even the RX1. Cheers.

A sony camera is commonly "seen" by the Mac. I mean, connect the camera to the iMac, so turn on the photographic camera, the menu will mountain on the desktop as an USB-key or an external HD. Then open up the DCIM folder and move the pictures to wherever y'all desire. Much improve than using iPhoto or whatever, yous are in total control to the folders you put your pictures in.

ane
I usually would put the card in a reader, instead of connecting the camera.
On the other hand, since I take a computer with prototype and workflow management software, I employ the computer as a tool instead of trying to do the machine's job. [Normally suck everything into Aperture, occasionally I will create a dedicated library for a special event or someone else's camera]

A sony photographic camera is usually "seen" by the Mac. I hateful, connect the camera to the iMac, then plough on the camera, the carte du jour will mountain on the desktop as an USB-key or an external Hard disk drive.
Only the higher terminate cameras tend to have this mode (and then it can exist changed in the photographic camera settings), run across MSC vs. PTP. Simply the RX100 has the mass storage device mode (and I recall it'due south also the default), and would very much assume this also to be the case for the RX1.
And so open the DCIM binder and move the pictures to wherever you want. Much better than using iPhoto or any, you lot are in total control to the folders yous put your pictures in.
I'chiliad in total control in which mailboxes I sort my emails, completely without using the Finder.

A sony camera is normally "seen" past the Mac. I hateful, connect the camera to the iMac, and then turn on the camera, the card will mount on the desktop as an USB-key or an external HD.

I am a flake lost hither... What accept mails and mailboxes to practise with this?
Anyways, I meet I am an ignorant here. So a very simple question: if y'all import the pictures straight in a library using a software, how do you control on what hard disk they go (internal external 1, external 2)?
And if you lot utilise different photo software, if you want your pictures organized in split folders, but the same folders whatever software you utilize, how do you do it?
This is why I like to organize them from the finder

I'thou in full command in which mailboxes I sort my emails, completely without using the Finder.
I am a flake lost hither... What take mails and mailboxes to practise with this?
That i can continue command of digital items, be them emails or images, via a 'browser' that is non the Finder. There are reasons why nobody stores their emails equally text files in the Finder folder system (well, in the end they are stored every bit text files in the Finder, inside a deep bureaucracy that nobody ever goes to with the Finder).
In short, sometimes an awarding that is tailor-fabricated for a certain certificate types makes treatment those 'documents' easier than using the Finder for it. Your electronic mail customer does information technology for the text files that are your emails, and applications like Discontinuity do it for prototype files.
So a very simple question: if you import the pictures straight in a library using a software, how practice you control on what hard disk they get (internal external ane, external 2)?
If you use a managed library, they become into the library and you thus control the location by placing the library on the drive of your option. If you utilize a referenced library, you can decide in the import console where exercise y'all want the image files go (incl. creating folders based on metadata, renaming files, creating a 2nd backup copy etc.).
And if y'all use different photo software, if you desire your pictures organized in split folders, but the aforementioned folders whatever software you use, how do you do information technology?
If you utilise a referenced library, they are in the (Finder) folders where you've put them. If y'all employ a managed library, yous export/re-create them from your 'library awarding', much like you would become the text of an email to use it in a word processing certificate by navigating to the email with your electronic mail client and and then copy information technology. And if you utilise Aperture or iPhoto every file open dialogue as well shows yous the internal binder structure of iPhoto and Discontinuity with admission to the jpeg previews.
This is why I like to organize them from the finder
I only disagree with the notion that one looses control of ones documents just because i is using a dissimilar tool than the Finder to organise them.
Re: Importing photos and videos into iMac from Sony camera
If you use a managed library, they go into the library and you thus control the location past placing the library on the bulldoze of your choice. If yous employ a referenced library, you can decide in the import panel where exercise you desire the epitome files go (incl. creating folders based on metadata, renaming files, creating a second backup re-create etc.).
And if you utilize unlike photo software, if yous want your pictures organized in separate folders, but the same folders whatever software yous use, how exercise you practise it?
If you use a referenced library, they are in the (Finder) folders where y'all've put them. If you use a managed library, y'all export/copy them from your 'library application', much similar you would get the text of an email to utilize information technology in a word processing document by navigating to the e-mail with your electronic mail customer and and then copy it. And if you use Aperture or iPhoto every file open dialogue also shows you the internal folder structure of iPhoto and Aperture with access to the jpeg previews.
This is why I similar to organize them from the finder

Hey cheers! It seems I accept to discover things, hither. I'll begin with i-Photo which I apply very seldom (I am a Graphic Converter & GIMP (and the great LightZone not supported anymore) user. I'll look at this dialogue in i-Photo showing the internal folder. Thanks for the tip.

The Finder is just a graphical representation of the files on your difficult drive. Ok, it does other things too, only in this case, it's but a way to manage files. You may retrieve your files are in these great folders and subfolders, but the truth is, your files are scattered all over your hard drive in whatever gild your computer decides.
iPhoto, like other photograph direction applications, at its bones level, is simply a graphical representation of the photos on your hard drive. iPhoto pretty much the same matter as the Finder, but specializes in photos.
Neither app tells you what platters and blocks your photos are stored in.

Re: Importing photos and videos into iMac from Sony camera
I utilize a Sony A77, and I simply use thr SD card reader in my MacBook Pro. A USB bill of fare reader will work as well. Usually a card reader will work faster than a straight connect to the camera. Sony stores the images in the standard DCIM folder on the card. When you insert the card in the reader, it will bear witness upwardly on the desktop every bit a hard drive. Simply navigate to the DCIM folder, select the images and put them where you want them. But, as others have sai, much easier to manage your images using a itemize using plan such equally iPhoto, Aperture, Lightroom, etc. Unlike case with Sonmo ideas. They put them in a folder chosen "Individual". Y'all tin still use the finder to copy them to a folder on a drive, just since they are in "AVCHD 2.0" formasomeone programs will non run across them for import into a Library. And, if you lot import them into iMovie they have to be converted into the Apple Intermediate file format to speed upwards editing, which takes a long time and makes huge files. My preference is to convertible the files to MP4 format using "Handbrake" prior to editing. Speeds upwards things a lot.

Belatedly to the political party, but you tin can always use Paradigm Capture to pull the files into your hard drive, if you don't want to mess with iPhoto.
Epitome Capture comes with your Mac, and then all you should take to do is USB cable your camera to your Mac, plow on your camera, and set it into any 'play' or 'download' way information technology may have, and so launch ImageCapture. Then select your photos you want, choose the destination you want, and printing Import. Or just import all.
If yous don't like ImageCapture, there are other paid apps out there. I use i from the mac app store called Silent Sifter, simply information technology does a lot more but import.
Good Luck!

All-time bet is to click on their proper name to see if they accept been active. Equally for me I was leery using the USB cable from my camera more out fearfulness that I may suspension it and having to make sure the bombardment is fully charge. Usually suggest getting a card reader and copying the files to the location you know; and then using whatever software y'all need. I notice your using10.7.5 should be okay.
